**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year scholar in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being a naturally shy and introverted individual, plunging into this new phase was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a considerable amount of enjoyment, I can assert that it’s been a life-altering experience. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections

One of the most daunting trials I encountered was forging friendships. The beginning of university can feel quite daunting, and if you’re an aspiring student reading this, you might be experiencing similar concerns. On my inaugural day in student housing, merely days before the semester began, I spent the whole of that day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to today, and I’m delighted to say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. These connections have morphed into my second family, both within my program and throughout the university. All it took was a splash of casual conversation with peers who were navigating the same waters as me.

What have I taken away from this? Making that courageous leap at the beginning of the year proves to be rewarding. If you’re not feeling prepared or comfortable right from the onset, that’s perfectly acceptable! There are countless icebreaker activities and avenues to meet fellow students. Above all, simply be yourself. Given the rich diversity at Imperial, you’re certain to discover others who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and the intricate nature of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and transitioning from the first term to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and appearing to succeed effortlessly.

What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar trials. If you’re finding something hard to grasp, it’s likely that others are having trouble too. The essential lesson I gleaned in my first year is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or the academic staff. This is arguably the most crucial takeaway during my first year: never hesitate to reach out and ask for support.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

In terms of support, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing guidance.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I wish I had explored it sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was assuming the position of a well-being representative for the year. This role enabled me to forge connections with faculty, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My largest takeaway? Utilize the support and resources at your disposal—you can never have an excess of help.

### Lessons Acquired

In summary, this year has enlightened me to the reality that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the plethora of support available from faculty and peers, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve mastered the art of balancing the pressures from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and leisure, and I’ve evolved in ways I never anticipated.

To anyone about to start their university adventure, understand that it’s completely natural to feel anxious. However, also recognize that with time, effort, and the support of those around you, you will carve out your niche and flourish.
