**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up for my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who used to be quite timid and introverted, stepping into the unknown was well outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences, I can contemplate what this journey has imparted to me and where I stand today.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most daunting aspects of starting university was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my very first day in student housing, just days ahead of the term commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. These connections have come to feel like a second family to me, both within my department and across the university.
What changed? Mustering that first bit of courage. Initiating conversations with others who were equally anxious and eager to connect was all it took. If you’re feeling unsure, don’t fret. Numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people await you. My main takeaway? Stay true to yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re likely to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic pressures of university was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university coursework was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your skills when observing others study and wondering if you measure up.
What helped me through this was recognizing that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having trouble grasping concepts, there’s a good chance others are too. The essential part is to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This was one of the most crucial lessons I learned in my first year: never hesitate to seek help.
### Establishing Relationships with Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are phenomenal. They truly care about students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained an open line of communication and were responsive to our concerns. While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had done so much earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Utilize the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on this year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxious thoughts I harbored—both before and during my time at university—were misplaced. With the extensive support available from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and self-discovery.
As I look ahead, I’m thankful for the challenges I’ve faced and the growth they’ve prompted. For anyone about to embark on their own university path, know that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious—but also understand that you will find your place, develop meaningful relationships, and flourish in ways you might not anticipate.
