**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of beginning my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always leaned towards shyness and introversion, plunging into this new phase proved to be quite daunting. However, now reflecting on a year of academic development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can assert that it has been a life-changing experience. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the initial and most daunting challenges I confronted was fostering friendships. For numerous incoming students, this often serves as a major source of tension, and I was no different. On the first day of my move to student housing, just days before the semester officially commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.
Now, looking at my situation, I’m pleased to report that I’ve forged some of the most significant friendships I have ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, all beginning with casual conversations and connecting with others who were equally uncertain.
So, what have I taken away from this? Taking that initial leap of faith early in the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, that’s perfectly fine—numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others await. Above all, stay true to yourself. With Imperial’s diverse community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Overcoming Academic Challenges
Another major obstacle was adapting to the rigorous workload and the intricacies of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was quite apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your own abilities when observing your peers study and worrying about your pace.
What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely others are too. The vital aspect is to reach out for help—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Developing the skill to seek assistance is one of the most crucial assets you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Significance of Community and Support
Regarding support, the faculty in the Materials department has been exceptional. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and are sympathetic to the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support options until later in the year, but in retrospect, I wish I had reached out earlier. One bold step I took at the beginning was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are myriad ways to connect with the staff, and I highly encourage making the most of these possibilities. The support systems exist for a purpose—don’t hesitate to utilize them.
### Major Insights
Reflecting on this year, it has become clear that the anxiety I experienced—both at the onset of university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the abundant support from both staff and peers, those fears can diminish. I have realized that I am never genuinely alone, and I have learned how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and laughter.
As I progress onward, I carry forward the lessons of taking leaps of faith, seeking help, and welcoming the journey with an open mind. To anyone about to embark on their own university journey: believe in yourself, take that initial step, and remember you are not alone.
