**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I began a journey that was infused with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been timid and reserved, venturing into the unfamiliar felt overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, trials, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I currently find myself?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the idea of making new friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be feeling similarly. On my first day in student accommodation, just a few days shy of the term starting, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, too anxious to go out and meet new people. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life.

These connections didn’t materialize instantly, but they started with small efforts—like striking up dialogues with others who were experiencing similar feelings. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with that first daring step. If you’re nervous about forming connections, don’t worry. The university hosts several icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. My most valuable lesson? Just be yourself. With such a rich community at Imperial, you’re sure to come across individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the academic workload and complexity was another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university-level material was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your skills, especially when you observe others studying and assume they have everything sorted out.

What benefited me immensely was the realization that I wasn’t isolated in this experience. If I found a concept challenging, there was a good chance that others were too. The most crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most valuable lesson I took from my first year.

### Assistance from the Staff

The faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us, addressing our worries and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had sought it sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the initial strides I made, and it turned out to be highly rewarding. It enabled me to forge connections with the staff, which became invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, getting to know the faculty is one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit. My suggestion? Utilize the available support systems—you can never receive too much help.

### Insights Gained

In looking back on this year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was often unfounded. With abundant support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

To summarize, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It has encompassed personal development, academic challenges, and the formation of lasting friendships. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, remember to take that leap, ask for help when needed, and most importantly, savor the experience.
