**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was enveloped in a mix of anxious anticipation, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to set off on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new experience was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and countless unforgettable experiences, I can say with certainty that it has been a life-changing journey. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was forming friendships. If you are a future student reading this, you might relate to those feelings. On my first day in student housing, just before the semester officially kicked off, I spent the entire day hidden away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I have created some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. These connections have turned into my second family, both within my program and throughout the university. It all began with brief conversations and connecting with others who felt just as anxious as I did.
What have I discovered? Taking that first bold step at the start of the year is vital. If you’re not ready immediately, it’s perfectly fine—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are certain to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adjusting to Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the rigorous workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. Transitioning from A-levels to university represented a significant upgrade, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and question your capabilities, especially when observing others appear to thrive.
What aided me during these times was the realization that we are all experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulties grasping something, it’s likely that others are facing the same issues. The essential component is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most important skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely care about students’ success and exhibit understanding towards the challenges we endure. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open and actively sought our feedback regarding any challenges we faced.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had discovered it sooner. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster relationships with staff members, which became a priceless resource. Whether through formal roles or casual exchanges, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the most beneficial actions you can undertake for yourself. Make the most of the support being provided—you can never have too much help!
### Insights Gained and Closing Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. Numerous support structures are in place, from staff to fellow students, to assist you in overcoming difficulties. Most significantly, I have come to understand that I am never truly alone on this journey.
This year has also illustrated how to juggle the stress from examinations and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment. It has been a year of growth, tenacity, and exploration, and I look forward to what lies ahead as I continue with my studies.
To anyone gearing up to commence university: embrace the trials, take those daring leaps, and keep in mind that support is always within arm’s reach.
