**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what awaited me. I was about to begin my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar felt overwhelming. Reflecting on the past year, I now recognize a period marked by personal development, obstacles, and innumerable unforgettable experiences. So, what insights did this pivotal year offer me, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the outset of university was forging friendships. If you are an incoming student, this could be one of your primary worries as well. On my first day in student housing, days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I have formed friendships that feel like family.
These connections have grown into my second family here at Imperial, beginning with simple gestures—like engaging in lighthearted conversation with others who were equally apprehensive. What I’ve discovered is that taking that first step of courage is essential. Even if you aren’t prepared or at ease right away, worry not! There will be numerous social events and opportunities to meet new people. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a rich mix of individuals at Imperial, you are sure to encounter those who share your passions and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying and wondering if you’re measuring up.
What assisted me in navigating these moments of uncertainty was recognizing that everyone experiences similar struggles. If something is difficult to grasp, chances are others are facing the same issue. The secret lies in reaching out for assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek guidance is arguably one of the most valuable skills to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open and were always willing to address our issues.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support that was available until later in the year, I wish I had accessed it sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was one of the early initiatives I embraced, and it turned out to be a fulfilling opportunity. It allowed me to foster connections with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are countless ways to engage with staff, and establishing such connections can significantly enhance your university experience. My key lesson? Utilize the resources available to you—you can never receive too much support!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that a lot of the apprehension I experienced—both before and during my time at university—was unwarranted. Abundant support exists, from faculty to fellow students, and you are never truly alone. This year has taught me to face challenges head-on, to seek help when needed, and to find enjoyment even amid the stress of exams and deadlines.
As I progress, I’m grateful for the personal growth I’ve achieved and look forward to what lies ahead. To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: take that leap, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to rely on the support available to you. You can do this!
