**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into a completely unfamiliar setting was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I realize just how much I’ve grown and how far I have progressed.

### Taking the Leap: Forming Connections
One of the most significant challenges I encountered at the beginning of my university experience was forging friendships. For countless incoming students, this aspect of university life can be quite daunting, and I was no different. On my first day at the student residence, just a few days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can assertively claim that I’ve made some of the best friends I could have hoped for. The individuals I’ve met here have become like a second family. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small talks with others who were equally apprehensive.

What did I take away from this? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take that leap at the start of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or confident, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned that staying true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’ll surely find others who share your passions and principles.

### Adjusting to Academic Rigor
Another major obstacle was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt particularly intense. It can be quite easy to feel lost or doubt your capabilities when observing others who appear to manage their studies effortlessly.

What aided me most was realizing that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, chances are many others are facing the same issues. The answer? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This is perhaps the most crucial lesson I absorbed during my first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or discussing matters with faculty, seeking help is essential.

### Encouragement from the Materials Department
On the topic of faculty, I cannot stress enough how amazing the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely care about our success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us and provided support whenever needed.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the support services available until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. One of the most rewarding decisions I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to build rapport with staff, which turned out to be a priceless experience. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My major takeaway here is to leverage the support and resources available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the concerns I had—both before and throughout my university experience—were baseless. With a plethora of support options from faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and personal insight.

For anyone gearing up to embark on their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, be authentic, and don’t hold back from seeking help. You’re not alone, and a whole community stands ready to assist you.
