**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in a mix of anxious excitement, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was preparing to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who used to be quite introverted, taking the plunge into this new phase felt overwhelming. Reflecting on the year, I now recognize it as a period of transformation—one marked by personal development, obstacles, and countless memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Relationships
One of the most daunting challenges of commencing university was the prospect of meeting new people. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may relate. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day cocooned in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
Imperial has morphed into a second family for me, beginning with small, simple conversations with others who were as new and apprehensive as I was. I’ve learned that taking that first step is essential. If you’re not ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be many icebreakers and events aimed at facilitating connections. Above all, remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to find individuals who align with your interests and ideals.
### Approaching the Academic Demands
Adapting to the academic workload and complexity was another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university-level studies proved challenging, and the shift from the first term to the second was particularly stark. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when you observe others who appear to have everything sorted out.
What aided me was the realization that I wasn’t alone—everyone was navigating similar waters. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely others were too. The crucial takeaway? Don’t be afraid to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, asking for help is one of the most vital skills to cultivate during your first year.
### Cultivating Connections with Academic Staff
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in our success and understand the hurdles we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year and are consistently available to address our queries.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the available support until late in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge valuable connections with staff members. Engaging with faculty can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the resources and support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support offered by staff and fellow students, I have come to realize that I am never genuinely alone. I’ve also learned how to juggle exam-related stress and deadlines alongside moments of enjoyment and laughter.
Looking back, I recognize how much I’ve evolved since that anxious fresher hiding in their room. University has been an enriching journey, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead in the coming years.
