**Thoughts on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has generally been introverted and quiet, stepping into this new phase felt like jumping into the deep end. Now, as I reflect on an academic year abundant with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I am reminded of the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
A major obstacle I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is a primary concern when starting university, and I was no different. On my initial day in the student accommodation, just days ahead of the term kicking off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step outside and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had. My classmates and companions have turned into a second family for me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and sparking small conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same uncertainties.
So, what are the lessons I’ve absorbed? First, taking that leap early is worthwhile, even when it feels intimidating. If you’re not entirely prepared, fret not—there are numerous icebreaker events and ways to engage with others. Second, embrace your true self. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to find those who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was evident, and the transition from the first term to the second proved even tougher. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and presume they’re excelling more than you.
What aided me in dealing with these emotions was the understanding that everyone shares similar challenges. If you’re finding something hard to grasp, it’s likely that others are, too. The main takeaway is to ask for assistance—whether it be from your classmates or the faculty. This became one of the most crucial lessons I learned during my first year: don’t hold back from seeking help.
### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials Science department have been outstanding. They truly desire for students to thrive and show compassion towards the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept communication lines open with us, ensuring we felt acknowledged and bolstered.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. In the beginning, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year, a position that enabled me to establish connections with faculty members. This proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My essential takeaway? Leverage the support available—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to and even during university was mostly unfounded. Thanks to the extensive support accessible from both the staff and my fellow students, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone. More importantly, I’ve learned how to juggle the stresses of exams and deadlines with moments filled with happiness and enjoyment.
Reflecting back, I recognize a year of personal development, resilience, and unforgettable experiences. For anyone preparing to embark on their own university path, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, embrace the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ve got this!
