**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overflowing with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted, plunging into such a novel and unfamiliar setting felt overwhelming. Looking back, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting tasks I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be one of your primary concerns. On my first day in student accommodation, just days before classes officially started, I spent the entire time tucked away in my room, too intimidated by the idea of venturing out and introducing myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I could imagine. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both within my program and throughout the wider university—have become like family to me. What was instrumental in reaching this point? It all began with casual conversations and connecting with others who were experiencing similar feelings.

The crucial insight? Take that bold step early on. Even if you aren’t feeling prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. And above all, just be your authentic self. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the elevated workload and complexity of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university level was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more formidable. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your competence when observing peers studying and seemingly succeeding.

What guided me through this was realizing that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The most vital lesson I took away from my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, reaching out for help can greatly impact your experience.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They sincerely care about students’ success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open communication channels, addressing our worries and providing direction.

Though I didn’t fully capitalize on the available pastoral support until the year’s end, I genuinely wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Initially, I made the decision to embrace the opportunity and became a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support and resources at your disposal; there’s no such thing as too much help.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that much of the anxiety I experienced—both before commencing university and during the academic year—was largely unnecessary. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, assistance is always nearby.

This year has taught me that I am never genuinely alone, even during moments of uncertainty. It has also illustrated how to navigate the pressures of examinations and deadlines while still reveling in the university experience.

As I look ahead, I’m eager to discover what the next phase of my journey in Materials Science and Engineering will unveil. If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, keep in mind: take that leap, seek help, and remember to savor the journey.
