**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxious excitement as I geared up to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been introverted and reserved, the idea of jumping into this new chapter felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been life-changing—rich with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges of beginning university was the fear of forming friendships. This concern is quite common among new students, and I was no different. On my first day in my dorm, I spent hours sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I’m thrilled to share that I’ve established some of the most significant friendships of my life.

The shift occurred when I found the courage to initiate small talk with those who were experiencing the same feelings as I was. These early interactions laid the groundwork for becoming a close-knit community here at Imperial. My most important lesson? Embrace that chance right from the start. If you’re not quite ready at once, don’t worry—there will be plenty of ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the university’s academic expectations was another major hurdle. The leap from A-levels to university coursework was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even tougher. At times, I found myself questioning my capabilities, especially when I compared myself to peers who seemed to have it all under control.

What assisted me in overcoming these moments of uncertainty was realizing that I wasn’t on this path alone. Everyone else was facing similar obstacles, and if I struggled with a concept, likely, others were too. The secret to overcoming these challenges lay in learning to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This straightforward yet crucial skill became my anchor throughout the year.

### The Value of Supportive Staff
One of the highlights of my experience has been the remarkable support from the staff in the Materials department. They are genuinely invested in the success of students and empathetic to the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open communication to respond to our concerns.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Accepting the role of a well-being representative for my year was a leap of faith for me, but it turned out to be one of my most fulfilling decisions. It facilitated my relationship-building with staff members, which has been invaluable. Whether through official responsibilities or casual exchanges, getting acquainted with the staff is something I highly encourage. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the worries I held—both leading up to and throughout university—were baseless. The array of support options, from faculty to fellow students, has been a game-changer. This year has shown me that I’m never truly isolated, even during challenging periods like exams and deadlines. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to strike a balance between diligent studies and enjoying the university experience.

As I anticipate the upcoming academic year, I feel more self-assured and ready to tackle whatever challenges arise. To anyone about to embark on their own university experience: embrace your apprehensions, take those bold steps, and remember that support is always accessible.
