**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with a mix of anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat shy and reticent, plunging into a new setting felt like a formidable challenge. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of remarkable personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. For many newcomers, this represents one of the principal concerns about entering university, and I was no exception. On my initial day in student housing, just days before the term formally commenced, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself to my peers.

Fast forward to now, and I can say with assurance that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. These bonds have morphed into my second family, both within the university and my program. It all required was a measure of bravery to initiate small talk with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.

What have I gleaned from this? Taking that first step at the year’s outset is essential. If you are not quite prepared or at ease right away, that is completely fine—numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to meet others will come your way. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is fundamental. With a multitude of diverse individuals throughout the university, you are sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Facing the Academic Obstacles

Another significant challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and the intricacy of the curriculum. The transition from A-levels to university was profound, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s simple to feel consumed or question your capabilities when observing peers who seem to be excelling.

What assisted me during these moments was the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating similar waters. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others are struggling with it as well. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most beneficial skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Support

Speaking of assistance, I cannot emphasize enough the exceptional nature of the Materials Science faculty. They are genuinely committed to student success and exhibit understanding toward the challenges we endure. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing support.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. That initial leap of faith led me to become a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to forge connections with faculty members that proved to be immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to interact with staff, and I highly encourage seizing these opportunities. My primary takeaway? Never hesitate to utilize the resources and support networks at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Overall, this year has revealed to me that the trepidation I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was largely misplaced. With the extensive range of support provided by faculty and fellow students, I realized that I was never genuinely isolated. I also acquired the ability to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and happiness.

Looking back, I am astonished at how far I have progressed since the anxious fresher who hid away in their room. This year has been an expedition of growth, resilience, and connections, and I am eager to discover what lies ahead.
