**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and doubt regarding the journey ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year scholar in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted, venturing into the unknown was quite daunting. Now, as I reflect on my initial academic year, I observe it as a time of tremendous development, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. So, what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you happen to be a prospective student perusing this, you might resonate with this apprehension. On my first day of settling into accommodations, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships I’ve ever known—friends who feel like family away from home.
What transformed? It began with simple conversations and realizing that everyone was navigating similar feelings. I understood that taking a courageous step at the onset of the year is key. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right from the start, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others abound. Most crucially, I learned that being authentic is the optimal tactic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was acclimatizing to the coursework and the level of difficulty. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities, especially upon observing others studying and assuming they’re faring better than you.
What aided me greatly was the reassurance that we’re all on a similar path. If you’re finding it hard to comprehend something, likely, others are too. The vital lesson here is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Learning to reach out for support is possibly the most essential skill to acquire during your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
On the subject of support, the faculty within the Materials department have been outstanding. They sincerely want students to excel and empathize with the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication and were always ready to address our worries.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, I wish I had explored it earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold moves I made at the year’s beginning. This role enabled me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which turned out to be tremendously beneficial. There exist numerous avenues to engage with staff, and I strongly recommend seizing these opportunities. My main takeaway? Never hesitate to utilize the resources and support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Key Takeaways
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the apprehensions I harbored before starting university—and even throughout the year—were mostly unfounded. With the extensive support from both faculty and peers, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned how to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and fun.
Ultimately, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a voyage of personal growth, resilience, and connection. If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, remember to take those leaps of faith, stay true to yourself, and embrace the support that surrounds you.
