**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was forthcoming. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase appeared formidable. In retrospect, I perceive an academic year filled with personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Taking the Plunge: Forming Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the process of making friends. This concern resonates with many incoming students, and I was no different. On my first day in student accommodation, just prior to the start of term, I remained confined to my room for the entire day, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Now, as I reflect on this, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced—companions who feel akin to a second family. The journey began with casual conversations and engaging with individuals who were equally new and apprehensive.

What has this taught me? Take the plunge from the onset. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease initially, that’s perfectly fine! Universities provide numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be true to yourself. With such a diverse array of students, you’re sure to discover those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic pressures of university was yet another substantial challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level studies was marked, and the progression from the first term to the second seemed even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when observing others appearing to excel.

What assisted me in navigating this was recognizing that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential step is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or faculty. Cultivating the ability to seek support may be the most crucial skill you’ll develop during your first year.

### Compassionate Staff and Wellbeing Support
The personnel within the Materials department have been outstanding. They truly desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we face. Throughout the academic year, they kept lines of communication open regarding our concerns and extended various support avenues.

Although I fully engaged with the pastoral support toward the end of the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. Accepting the role of a year wellbeing representative was a significant leap I took at the beginning of the year, and it ultimately became one of my most beneficial decisions. It enabled me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable.

There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My largest takeaway? Make the most of the support at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
This year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support accessible from faculty and fellow students, there’s always a path to navigate challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that enjoying university life—even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines—is entirely possible.

Reflecting on the past, I view a year of evolution, resilience, and joy. For anyone about to begin their university adventure, remember that feeling anxious is completely normal. Take that leap, welcome the obstacles, and don’t shy away from asking for help. You’ll be astonished at how much you can accomplish and the enjoyment you’ll have along the way.
