**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was set to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been rather shy and reserved, venturing into the unknown felt daunting. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a multitude of joyful experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendship
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the idea of forming friendships. If you are a prospective student reading this, you might feel the same apprehension. On my first day moving into my accommodation—mere days before the term officially commenced—I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to today, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become like a second family to me, both within my program and across the university. All it took was stepping outside of my comfort zone and striking up casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings.
What have I taken away from this? Firstly, it’s beneficial to take that initial leap, even if it feels intimidating. If you’re not quite ready, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others will arise. Secondly, always remain true to yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’ll undoubtedly find individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the academic requirements of university was another considerable challenge. The leap from A-level studies to university-level coursework was evident, and the transition from the first semester to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your own capabilities when you observe others studying diligently and wonder if you’re keeping pace.
What aided me in navigating this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The key is to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty members. This is arguably the most crucial lesson I acquired during my first year: never hesitate to ask for help when you need it.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
One of the remarkable aspects of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the exceptional support from the faculty. They earnestly want students to succeed and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative in my year was another initiative I embraced at the year’s start. This position enabled me to forge relationships with faculty, which proved invaluable. There are countless avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Utilize the assistance and resources offered to you—you can never have too much support.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often misplaced. With the extensive support options available from faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to balance the stress associated with exams and deadlines while still finding time for enjoyment, illustrating the importance of stepping outside of my comfort zone.
As I look forward, I am thankful for the challenges and personal growth I’ve encountered. To anyone preparing to begin their university experience: embrace the jitters, take the plunge, and remember that support is always within reach.
