**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself brimming with anxious excitement as I prepared to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, the idea of immersing myself in university life felt overwhelming. Reflecting now, I recognize a year teeming with personal development, adversities, and an abundance of unforgettable experiences. So, what lessons have I gleaned from this year, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the challenge of forming new friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you may resonate with these feelings. On my initial day in student housing, just prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had.

These connections feel like a second family, beginning with something as simple as casual conversation with others who were equally apprehensive. What did I take away from this? Taking that initial leap of faith at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not quite ready at the outset, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Challenges

Adjusting to the academic pressures of university was yet another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level material was apparent, and the difference from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing peers studying and succeeding. However, one crucial reminder was that everyone shares these experiences. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, others likely are too.

The most significant lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or the academic staff, reaching out can be transformative. Don’t hesitate to ask for clarification or support—it’s a skill that will benefit you throughout your university journey and beyond.

### The Supportive Staff

Speaking of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They are truly invested in students’ success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they preserved open lines of communication with us, attending to our concerns and providing direction.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had done so much earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the first steps I took, and it ultimately proved to be a fulfilling experience. It allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which became invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, familiarizing yourself with the staff is one of the best moves you can make. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never receive too much help.

### Lessons Learned

As I reflect on this past year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I experienced before and during university were unfounded. Thanks to the broad array of support available from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has enlightened me on how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

If I could impart one piece of wisdom to incoming students, it would be this: confront the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and do not hesitate to ask for assistance. University is a period for personal growth, and with the right outlook and support, you’ll emerge more resilient on the other side.
