**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and introverted, stepping into this new environment was certainly outside my comfort zone. However, reflecting on an academic year that was rich in personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve grown and what I’ve achieved.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating obstacles I confronted at the outset of university was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my initial day in student housing, I spent the entire time cloistered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known.

The secret lay in taking that first step and initiating brief conversations with those who were equally unsure. Here at Imperial, I’ve created a second family, and it all initiated with a dash of bravery and casual chit-chat. My greatest insight? It pays off to push yourself beyond your comfort zone early on. If you’re not ready just yet, don’t be concerned—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was acclimatizing to the academic workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more intense. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your skills when observing others studying and seemingly thriving.

What assisted me in overcoming this was realizing that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a topic, it’s likely that others are in the same situation. The most crucial lesson I absorbed in my first year was to reach out for assistance. Whether it’s from colleagues or faculty members, asking for help can be transformative.

### The Importance of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. They truly care about student success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open lines of communication and provided support whenever it was requested.

Even though I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I now realize I should have engaged with it sooner. One of my best choices was to take on the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are countless avenues to cultivate relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My suggestion? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve discovered that the apprehension I felt before and during university was often unfounded. With the abundant support options provided by both staff and classmates, I was seldom truly alone. I’ve learned how to navigate the stress stemming from exams and deadlines while also carving out moments for joy and relaxation.

In the end, this year has represented substantial personal growth. It has revealed to me the significance of taking risks, seeking help, and seizing the opportunities that arise.
