**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I prepared to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unknown was not what my introverted and reserved nature was accustomed to. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period that has been transformative—filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what have I learned this year, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, you might also share this concern. On my first day in student housing, just before the term commenced, I spent the full day sequestered in my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had.
At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with taking small actions—engaging in light conversation with others who were similarly positioned. My most significant takeaway? Take that leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not yet ready or feel uncomfortable, that’s okay—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who share your passions and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major hurdle was adapting to the coursework and the heightened difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the leap from the first term to the second term felt even more significant. It wasn’t always easy to maintain confidence, particularly when I noticed others studying and felt like I was falling behind.
What helped me through this period? First, reminding myself that everyone was navigating similar struggles. If I didn’t grasp a concept, it was likely that others were puzzled too. The key is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This has probably been the most important lesson I gleaned during my first year: don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance.
### Exceptional Staff and Supportive Care
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are amazing. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open regarding any challenges we were facing.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early on, I took the initiative and became a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to forge connections with faculty, which proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can have a significant impact. My suggestion? Make the most of the support resources at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I felt—both before and during university—was often unfounded. There’s an abundance of support available, from both staff and fellow students, to help you tackle any obstacles. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve learned how to balance the pressures from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
Looking back, I take pride in how far I’ve advanced. Starting university may seem like plunging into the deep end, but it’s also a unique chance for growth, connection, and self-exploration.
