**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with a combination of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to commence my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone naturally shy and introverted, venturing into new territory was definitely outside of my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on this life-changing academic year, I recognize a time full of substantial personal development, obstacles, and a multitude of unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the thought of forging new friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the start of classes, I concealed myself in my room for the whole day, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
These connections didn’t happen instantly, but they emerged from small beginnings—casual chats with others who were experiencing the same feelings as I was. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with taking that first courageous step. My key takeaway? Be bold and take the plunge. If you’re not ready yet, don’t stress—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Trials
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another major challenge. The shift from A-level studies to university-level coursework proved tough, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more significant. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying and seemingly thriving.
What assisted me in navigating this was the awareness that I wasn’t alone. If I struggled with something, it’s likely that others were grappling with the same issue. The trick to getting through this was learning to reach out for help—whether from classmates or faculty. This became perhaps the most important lesson I absorbed in my first year: don’t shy away from seeking assistance.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been phenomenal. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, responding to our worries and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support offered until the latter part of the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the risks I took early in the year, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It helped me forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are many opportunities to get acquainted with faculty, and I strongly encourage utilizing these chances. My core message here? Don’t hesitate to tap into the resources and support systems at your disposal—they exist for a purpose.
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university, and even during the journey, was often unfounded. With the tremendous support provided by both faculty and fellow students, I came to realize I was never genuinely alone. I also learned how to strike a balance between the stresses of exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of happiness and fun.
In conclusion, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a voyage of growth, perseverance, and exploration. If you’re about to embark on a similar journey, understand that feeling nervous is perfectly normal—but also recognize that you’ll have the support necessary to flourish. Take those bold steps, stay true to yourself, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
