**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxious excitement as I geared up to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As a person who has always been introverted and reserved, jumping into the university experience felt incredibly challenging. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been a period of significant transformation—filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the thought of forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate with you. On my first day in student housing, I spent hours sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known—relationships that feel akin to a second family.
What facilitated this? Taking that crucial first leap of faith. Even if you’re not quite ready to dive right in, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with your peers await. I also discovered the significance of being authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals at university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic demands posed another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second entailed an even steeper learning progression. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when witnessing others appear to thrive effortlessly.
What sustained me during those periods was the understanding that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are as well. The secret lies in seeking assistance—be it from your classmates or your professors. Learning to ask for help is arguably one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your inaugural year.
### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
A highlight of my experience has been the extraordinary support provided by the Materials department staff. They genuinely desire for students to excel and are sensitive to the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and were always receptive to our inquiries.
I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, yet I wish I had sought it out earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative allowed me to foster relationships with faculty members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, establishing rapport with your professors and support staff can make a significant impact. My most significant takeaway? Utilize the resources and assistance offered—you can never have too much support.
### Takeaways
This year has imparted the lesson that many of the anxieties I held about university were unwarranted. With ample support from staff and fellow students, I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone. More crucially, I’ve learned how to manage the stresses of exams and deadlines while still embracing moments of joy and enjoyment.
Reflecting on my journey, I feel proud of the progress I’ve made since those anxious first days. University has truly been a path of growth, and I’m enthusiastic about what the next chapter will bring.
