**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been quiet and introverted, plunging into this new phase felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on the academic year gone by, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and numerous happy occasions. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered at the beginning of university was forging friendships. For a lot of incoming students, this can be a primary source of distress. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before classes officially commenced, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, far too daunted to emerge and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known—friends who truly feel like family.

How did this change come about? It all began with minor actions, like engaging in casual conversations with individuals who were equally uncertain. I discovered that taking early risks is vital. If you don’t feel prepared right away, it’s perfectly acceptable—there are numerous social events and activities designed to help you build connections. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is the best way to go. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to encounter others who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. Being part of such a rigorous academic setting can occasionally undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying intently and worry that you’re lagging behind.

What enabled me to cope with these emotions was the understanding that everyone is grappling with similar issues. If something doesn’t make sense, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The essential takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most crucial lesson of my first year.

### The Encouraging Faculty

On the subject of assistance, the staff within the Materials Science and Engineering department are exceptional. They truly care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we face. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open and addressed our inquiries.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until late in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to cultivate connections with faculty, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My top lesson? Fully utilize the support that’s available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often baseless. There are myriad support systems in place, ranging from staff to fellow students, to help you manage the challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

As I get ready to advance in my studies, I feel thankful for the development I’ve undergone and the relationships I’ve established. For anyone about to embark on their university journey, my message is straightforward: take that leap, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.
