**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety as I prepared to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, jumping into the university experience felt quite overwhelming. In retrospect, I now view this past year as one filled with personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Initial Challenge: Forming Connections
One of the most daunting aspects of entering university was the idea of forming connections. If you’re an incoming student, this may resonate with you as well. I distinctly remember my first day in student accommodation, where I found myself tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.
The pivotal moment came when I decided to take a small yet impactful step—initiating light-hearted conversations with others who were equally new and apprehensive. Gradually, these exchanges grew into significant friendships, and I now view my peers here at Imperial as my extended family.
What did I discover? It’s essential to take that initial leap of faith early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re likely to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another substantial challenge was adapting to the academic rigors and the heightened complexity of the curriculum. The transition from A-levels to university was marked and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when witnessing peers study and assume they’re ahead of you.
What aided me in this adjustment was the understanding that we are all experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, others likely are too. The key is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Developing the ability to seek help is arguably the most important lesson you can learn in your first year.
### The Value of Support Networks
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and provided various avenues of support.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care offered until the year’s end, and I only wish I had engaged with it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I did take a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, allowing me to foster relationships with staff members. This was incredibly beneficial, and I urge others to seek ways to connect with their instructors and mentors. The assistance they provide exists for a reason—don’t hesitate to make use of it.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I held—both prior to and during my time at university—were unfounded. With the abundant support from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while cherishing moments of joy and connection.
If I could impart one piece of advice to new students, it would be: welcome the anxiety, take those bold steps, and don’t shy away from asking for help. University is a time for evolution, and you’ll find that the challenges you encounter will only enhance the value of your accomplishments.
