**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student pursuing [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into the complexities of university life felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, trials, and a lot of enjoyment, I realize the extent of my learning and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was forging friendships. This concern resonates with many incoming students, and I was no different. On my first day in student housing, just days before the term officially commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can wholeheartedly affirm that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. My classmates have evolved into a second family, all beginning with brief chats and shared moments. What I’ve discovered is that taking that first step—regardless of how intimidating it may appear—is worthwhile. If you’re not ready to engage immediately, there’s no need to stress! Universities offer numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with fellow students.
Above all, I’ve discovered that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter others who share your passions and principles.
### Navigating Academic Obstacles
Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of university material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more rigorous. It’s easy to get overwhelmed or question your skills, particularly when observing others appearing to thrive.
What assisted me during these moments was the awareness that I wasn’t in this alone. Everyone was facing similar hurdles, and if I found something challenging, chances are others were too. The best advice I can offer is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is one of the most vital skills you can acquire in your first year.
### The Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the Materials Science faculty at Imperial is remarkable. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing support.
Though I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral care available until later in the year, I wish I had accessed it earlier. At the start, I made a bold move by becoming a Year Well-Being Representative, a position that afforded me the opportunity to connect with faculty members. This turned out to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway from this is to utilize the help and resources available—you can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt—both before and during university—was mostly unfounded. With a range of support systems available, from staff to fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also finding joy and personal development.
Reflecting on my journey, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and eager about what the future holds. To anyone gearing up for their first year, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.
