**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was consumed by nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize it was not only filled with obstacles but also a period of considerable personal development and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained from this pivotal year, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is likely among the greatest worries when commencing university. On my first day in student housing, mere days before the term officially started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life—friends who truly feel like family.
How did this transformation occur? It initiated with small actions, like engaging in simple conversation with others who were equally new and hesitant as I was. I discovered that taking that first step is vital. If you aren’t feeling prepared or comfortable immediately, fret not—there are abundant ice-breaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I learned that being authentic is the most effective strategy. With such a varied community of students, you’re certain to encounter individuals who connect with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the demands of the workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even tougher. It’s easy to feel overburdened or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and perceive them as being further along.
What aided me through this phase was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, chances are others are too. The critical takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or the academic staff. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing assistance.
While I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I regret not doing so sooner. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. Engaging with the staff, whether through official roles or casual exchanges, is one of the finest actions you can take for your own benefit. My main takeaway? Utilize the support at your disposal—you can never have too much!
### Takeaways
In retrospect, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt—both prior to and during university—was often unfounded. Thanks to the extensive support options available, from faculty to fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I also learned how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of development, connection, and knowledge. To anyone about to begin their own university adventure: take the plunge, seek assistance, and remember to savor the experience.
