**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has typically been introverted and reserved, jumping into this new phase was quite intimidating. Reflecting back now, I recognize an academic year rich with development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what have I acquired along the way, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was the task of befriending others. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share that same feeling of unease. On my very first day in student housing, just days before the semester officially commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships—friends who have become like family.

What shifted? It all initiated with casual conversations and bonding with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings. I learned that taking the plunge early in the year is essential. If you’re not ready or comfortable right off the bat, that’s perfectly fine—there are plenty of social events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is crucial. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those with whom you resonate.

### Navigating the Academic Transition

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was apparent, and the jump from the first term to the second was even more striking. It wasn’t always straightforward to sustain self-confidence, especially when I observed classmates studying and questioned my own capabilities.

What aided me in managing this difficulty was the understanding that everyone was facing similar struggles. If I didn’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others were in the same situation. The most important lesson I learned in my first year was the necessity of seeking assistance—whether from colleagues or faculty. Asking for help is not a weakness; it’s an essential skill that can genuinely make a difference.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the staff within the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care for students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and were always eager to address our issues.

Though I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until late in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This role facilitated relationship-building with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly valuable. Whether through formal involvement or informal chats, connecting with the staff is one of the smartest moves you can make for yourself. My most significant takeaway? Make the most of the resources and support available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during university—was generally unfounded. With a plethora of support from faculty and fellow students, those fears were manageable. This year has demonstrated to me that I’m never truly alone and has taught me how to balance exam-related stress and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and happiness.

As I look ahead, I’m thankful for the growth, relationships, and experiences this year has offered. To anyone preparing to embark on their university journey: take that leap, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help. You can do it!
