**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had typically been introverted and withdrawn, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the year, I recognize an educational experience that has been life-changing—filled with personal development, obstacles, and abundant happiness. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
A daunting element of starting university was the task of forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely something that worries you too. On my initial day at student housing, just before the term commenced, I spent the whole day confined to my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet anyone.
Fast forward to now, and I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who align with my interests and principles. All it required was stepping out of my comfort zone and initiating casual chats with others who felt just as apprehensive as I did.
What did I take away from this? Making that first move is essential. Even if you think you’re unprepared, there will be ample social events and chances to connect. Most importantly, be authentic. Imperial comprises a diverse community, and you’re certain to find like-minded individuals.
### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the elevated complexity of the content. The transition from A-levels to university was distinct, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more taxing. It’s easy to feel inundated or self-doubt when observing others studying and appearing to thrive.
What aided me during these times was the understanding that I wasn’t alone. Everyone shared similar experiences, and if I struggled with a concept, it’s likely that others did too. The critical lesson? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members, reaching out can be immensely beneficial.
### The Significance of Support and Community
Regarding staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support personnel truly wish for students to excel and understand the obstacles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the academic year and are always willing to assist.
I didn’t fully leverage the available support services until late in the year, and I regret not doing it sooner. Taking that leap of faith earlier could have significantly impacted my experience. One proactive step I took at the beginning of the year was becoming a well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff, which proved invaluable.
There are numerous opportunities to connect with faculty, and doing so is among the best actions you can take for your benefit. My suggestion? Utilize the support systems offered to you. There’s no such thing as too much aid!
### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has demonstrated to me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support available from faculty and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to manage stress from exams and deadlines while also finding moments of joy and relaxation.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of growth, resilience, and enlightenment. If you’re about to embark on your university journey, keep in mind: take the leap, seek assistance, and fully embrace the experience.
