**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted, stepping into the unknown was not something I was used to. Now, reflecting on my first year, I observe a time of significant personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights did I gain, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was establishing friendships. For many incoming students, this is one of the most anxiety-inducing elements of beginning university, and I was certainly no different. On my initial day in student housing, just a few days prior to term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, not just within my course but throughout the university as well. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with individuals who were also navigating this new chapter.

What did I take away from this experience? Firstly, it’s valuable to take that leap of faith early. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy at the start, don’t be concerned—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to bond with others. Secondly, the best approach is to be authentic. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re bound to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to the Academic Shift

Another major hurdle was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course content. The leap from A-level studies to university was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. Being in such a demanding academic environment can occasionally unsettle your confidence, especially when you observe others studying hard and feel as though you’re lagging behind.

What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone else is grappling with similar challenges. If something isn’t clicking, chances are you’re not alone—there are likely others who find themselves in the same situation. The crucial point is to reach out for assistance. This was perhaps the most vital lesson I absorbed during my initial year: don’t be shy about seeking support from your classmates and instructors.

### The Value of Support and Connection

Regarding staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is genuinely outstanding. The lecturers and tutors earnestly want students to thrive and are acutely aware of the hurdles we encounter. They understand our struggles and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year to address any challenges that arise.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered to me until late in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. One bold move I made early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to form connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous pathways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway is to fully utilize the support systems that are in place—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In summary, my initial year has illustrated to me that the trepidation I felt at the outset of university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the extensive range of support offered by both staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

Looking back, I recognize how much I’ve evolved, and I eagerly anticipate continuing this journey. For anyone preparing to commence their own university experience, remember: take the plunge, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help.
