**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxious excitement as I readied myself to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As an individual who has always been somewhat reserved, stepping into the unknown was a significant departure from my comfort zone. In retrospect, this past year has been a period of transformation—marked by personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting features of commencing university was the thought of establishing new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, I spent hours retreating in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known—relationships that feel like a second family.

What initiated this change? It began with small steps, such as engaging in light conversation with others who were equally new and uncertain. I learned that taking those initial leaps of faith is essential. If you’re not ready to engage immediately, fret not—there are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being genuine is the best way forward. With such an eclectic community at Imperial, you’re likely to meet people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Facing the Academic Trials

Adapting to the academic demands and heightened difficulty of university-level material was another considerable obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. There were moments when I questioned my capabilities, particularly as I observed my peers apparently flourishing.

What assisted me in navigating these difficulties was the understanding that I was not alone. Everyone was experiencing similar challenges, and there’s a good chance that if I found something perplexing, others did too. The core lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or the teaching faculty, requesting help is vital for thriving in your first year.

### The Helpful Staff

Speaking of assistance, the personnel in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely aspire for student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing counsel.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out sooner. Early on, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with staff members. This proved to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or informal exchanges, fostering relationships with the staff is one of the most rewarding actions you can take. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never seek too much help.

### Insights Gained

As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I held—both prior to and during university—were baseless. With the abundant support from staff and fellow students, I’ve recognized that I’m never truly alone. More critically, I’ve learned how to juggle the demands of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and relaxation.

This year has been a path of development, and I am eager to see what lies ahead as I advance in my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
