**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was enveloped in apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been introverted and reserved, plunging into such a new and demanding atmosphere was intimidating. Reflecting upon it now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and significant happiness. So, what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share similar concerns. On my very first day in student housing, merely days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a new family. All it demanded was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others experiencing similar feelings. What I’ve come to realize is that taking that first step is invariably rewarding. If you’re not quite ready or at ease initially, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaker activities and opportunities exist to assist you in connecting with others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your passions and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Demands

Another major hurdle was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second appeared even more substantial. It’s easy to feel inundated or second-guess your capabilities when witnessing others studying or thriving.

What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial takeaway is to seek assistance. This could be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year—never hesitate to contact your classmates or teaching staff for guidance.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of the staff, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials department is. The lecturers and support personnel truly desire your success and show immense understanding toward the obstacles students encounter. They ensure open communication throughout the year and are always willing to assist.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. Initially, I made a significant move by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to nurture relationships with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to engage with staff, and doing so can enhance your university experience considerably. My most important lesson here is to fully utilize the resources available to you—there’s no such thing as too much support!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve discovered that the nervousness I felt—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive array of support options from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and recreation.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of self-exploration, growth, and meaningful connections. If you’re about to embark on a similar journey, understand that feeling nervous is completely normal—but also recognize that you’re entering an environment teeming with support, friendship, and the chance to flourish.
