**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to embark on my first-year experience in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into the unfamiliar was a significant stretch of my comfort zone. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year that has been life-changing—brimming with individual growth, obstacles, and abundant happiness. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I perceive my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous new students, this is frequently the most intimidating aspect of starting at university, and I was certainly no exception. On my inaugural day in the student residence, just days before the term officially commenced, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve connected with here—both within my course and across the university—have become akin to a second family for me. All it required was boldly stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with others who were in the same situation as I was.
What did I discover? I learned that summoning the courage to take that first step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not entirely ready or comfortable, don’t fret—countless ice-breaker activities and chances to meet others are available. Most importantly, I came to understand that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a rich tapestry of community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals with whom you connect.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and complexity of the course materials. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. Being in such a rigorous environment can occasionally undermine your self-confidence, particularly when you notice others studying and worry that you might be lagging behind.
What assisted me through this was realizing that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The essential takeaway is to seek help—whether from peers or teaching staff. In my view, this is the most critical skill to master during your first year.
### The Value of Assistance
Speaking of staff, I cannot stress enough how outstanding the Materials department personnel are. They genuinely care about students’ success and show understanding toward the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open channels of communication and were always ready to address any concerns we presented.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Taking on the responsibility of a year well-being representative at the beginning of the year was one leap I’m grateful for. It allowed me to foster relationships with staff members, which turned out to be profoundly rewarding.
There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and I highly suggest making the most of these chances. Whether through formal roles or informal discussions, developing these connections can significantly enhance your experience. My key takeaway is straightforward: do not hesitate to engage with the support systems available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that much of the anxiety I felt—both before starting university and throughout my time here—was largely unfounded. There are numerous resources and support systems available, from staff to fellow students, to help you tackle the difficulties ahead.
This year has taught me that I am never truly on my own. It has illustrated how to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines while also finding time for joy and enjoyment. Most crucially, it has reminded me that stepping beyond your comfort zone, even when it feels intimidating, can result in some of the most fulfilling experiences.
