**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
In October 2022, nearly ten months ago, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat shy and reserved, the thought of venturing into the unknown was intimidating. However, reflecting on this past academic year, I realize it has been a time of significant personal development, challenges, and ample enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship
One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the outset was the difficulty of making friends. For many new students, this is among the most daunting parts of entering university—and I certainly felt that way. On my first day at the student accommodations, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to go out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my program and throughout the university—have come to feel like a second family. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with fellow students who also felt apprehensive.
So, what did I come to learn? Firstly, it’s beneficial to take that initial leap at the beginning of the year, even when it feels awkward. If you’re not entirely ready to jump in immediately, don’t fret—there will be plenty of icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Secondly, the most valuable thing you can do is to simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adjusting to the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The difference between A-levels and university was apparent, and the transition from the first term to the second felt especially steep. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing others studying and wondering if you’re keeping pace.
What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something confusing, there are likely others who feel the same way. The essential thing is to seek help—be it from your peers or the teaching team. Learning to ask for support might be the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Support and Community
On the subject of support, the staff within the Materials department have been nothing short of amazing. They are genuinely invested in our success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing assistance.
While I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which helped me form connections with faculty members. This experience proved to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal positions or casual meetings, building relationships with the staff is one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit. My primary takeaway? Utilize the resources and support that are available to you; you can never receive too much help.
### Key Insights
Reflecting on the year, I have learned an immense amount. The nervous emotions I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—were often misplaced. With the extensive support options offered by both staff and fellow students, I discovered that I was never truly alone.
Most importantly, I learned how to strike a balance between the demands of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and happiness. University is a period of growth, and although it brings its challenges, it also presents innumerable opportunities to flourish.
To anyone gearing up to commence their own university experience: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You may be surprised by how far you can progress.
