**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in feelings of anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of beginning my path as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always considered myself introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar was a thrilling yet intimidating idea. Now, reflecting on a year filled with learning, obstacles, and enjoyable moments, I am able to appreciate the profound impact this journey has had on me. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. For numerous new students, this can be one of the most anxiety-inducing facets of starting at university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be a concern for you as well. On my initial day in student accommodations, just before the term officially kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to emerge and introduce myself to anyone.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly express that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These connections have turned into a second family for me, both within my program and throughout the university. What changed? It began with casual conversations and realizing that everyone else was also seeking connections.
The most significant lesson I gleaned from this experience is to take that initial leap of faith. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, be genuine. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are bound to find others who share your passions and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and complexity of the curriculum. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more significant. It’s common to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when witnessing others study and worrying about falling behind.
What assisted me in managing this situation was realizing that everyone encounters difficulties at some stage. If you’re puzzled about something, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial takeaway is to seek help. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year—reaching out to classmates and faculty when you require assistance.
### Encouragement from the Materials Department
On the subject of support, I cannot stress enough how exceptional the staff in the Materials department are. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and are aware of the obstacles we confront. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, responding to our concerns and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early on, I stepped up by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me form connections with staff members. This became immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with the staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most substantial takeaway is to utilize the resources and assistance available—you can never have too much support!
### Insights from the Year
Overall, this year has taught me that many of the apprehensive feelings I harbored before commencing university—and even throughout the year—were largely unfounded. With the extensive support offered by both faculty and fellow students, there is always someone to rely on. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated, and I’ve figured out how to manage exam stress and deadlines while also embracing moments of happiness and enjoyment.
As I look back, it’s clear to me how much I’ve developed, both academically and personally. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, remember that it’s completely normal to feel anxious—but also keep in mind that you’re entering an atmosphere abundant with opportunities to flourish, connect, and evolve.
