**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I set out on a journey that was filled with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar was a formidable challenge. Now, as I look back on the recent academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and abundant happiness. So, what insights have I gained this year, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was forming friendships. If you’re an aspiring student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the entire day secluding myself in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life here at Imperial. These bonds have morphed into my second family, all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small interactions with fellow students who shared my apprehensions.

What did I realize? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you aren’t ready or feel uneasy right away, that’s perfectly fine! There will be countless icebreaker events and ways to engage with others. Most importantly, I discovered the importance of being authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find individuals who connect with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another substantial obstacle was adapting to the increased workload and the level of difficulty in the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel swamped or doubt your capabilities when witnessing others working diligently and seemingly thriving.

What assisted me during these times was acknowledging that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling with a concept, it’s likely others are too. The crucial part is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the academic staff. This was perhaps the most vital insight of my first year: never hesitate to ask for help.

### Assistance from Faculty

Regarding support, the staff within the Materials department are fantastic. They genuinely wish to see students succeed and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open with us and demonstrated compassion for our difficulties.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support accessible until the latter part of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the year’s onset, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position facilitated my relationship-building with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My main takeaway here is to utilize the support available—you can never be over-resourced!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt before and during my university experience was often unwarranted. Support abounds, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist you in navigating these challenges. I’ve come to realize that I am never truly on my own, and I’ve learned how to juggle enjoying my time while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

As I progress, I feel thankful for the growth, the friendships, and the insights I’ve acquired throughout this transformative first year.
