**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, diving into this new experience was far from easy. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and numerous joyful moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
### Confronting the Anxiety of Friend-Making
One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered at the onset of university was the task of making friends. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may relate. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the term officially commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture outside and introduce myself.
Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I could have hoped for. Here at Imperial, particularly within my course, I’ve discovered a second family. It all started with light conversation and connecting with others who were navigating similar feelings.
What did I take away from this experience? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not yet prepared or at ease, fear not—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adjusting to the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the leap from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. Being in such a rigorous academic atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind.
What aided me in navigating this was the awareness that everyone is facing similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, others likely grapple with it as well. The key is to reach out for help—either from your classmates or the teaching staff. Developing the skill to seek support is arguably the most important lesson you can learn in your first year.
### Exceptional Staff and Pastoral Support
On the topic of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and support personnel genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and offering guidance.
Though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had embraced it earlier. One proactive step I took was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are multiple avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My greatest insight? Utilize the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt prior to commencing university—and even throughout the year—was largely baseless. With the wealth of support from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to navigate the stress from exams and deadlines while also embracing enjoyment and fun, and I’ve developed greater confidence in myself along the journey.
As I progress, I am thankful for the challenges and opportunities that have shaped me during my first year at Imperial. To anyone gearing up to embark on their own university voyage: take the plunge, welcome the support around you, and have faith that you will discover your niche.
