**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety as I set out on my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. Entering this new phase was a considerable challenge for someone who has always been somewhat introverted. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I can appreciate how significant this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the challenge of making new acquaintances. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be feeling the same way. I recall my first day in student housing, preferring to remain in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known.
The crucial step was that first jump—initiating small conversations and engaging with others who were equally anxious. If you’re feeling uncertain or overwhelmed, don’t fret. There are plenty of icebreaker activities and opportunities to connect with others. My most significant lesson? Be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your passions and principles.
### Navigating Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic demands and difficulty of university-level material was another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when witnessing classmates visibly thriving in their studies.
What aided me was the realization that everyone faces similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, the chances are that others are as well. The most productive action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to seek help is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### Cultivating Relationships with Faculty
On the subject of support, the staff in the Materials department have been outstanding. They truly care about student success and are consistently understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our issues and offering valuable advice.
Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had explored it earlier. One of the best choices I made was to serve as a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to forge strong relationships with faculty members, which proved incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal positions or informal exchanges, getting to know your professors and tutors is among the most rewarding steps you can take. Utilize the resources and support available—there’s always value in seeking assistance!
### Insights Gained
In hindsight, this year has shown me that many of the anxieties I experienced—both before I embarked on my university journey and during my initial term—were largely baseless. With the extensive support from faculty and fellow students, I realized I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while also embracing joy and fun, and I’ve developed greater self-confidence throughout the process.
If I could extend a single piece of advice to incoming students, it would be this: welcome the challenges, take those courageous steps forward, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. University is a period of personal growth, and with the right approach, it can become one of the most fulfilling experiences of your life.
