**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I set off on a journey that was equally thrilling and intimidating: beginning my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. Initially, I was anxious, apprehensive, and uncertain of what lay ahead. Plunging into the unknown was not something my naturally shy and reserved nature was familiar with. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Taking the Plunge: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely this is one of your primary concerns as well. On my first day moving into my accommodation—just days before the semester began—I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to the present, and I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships in my life.
The secret? Taking that first step. It began with casual conversations and connecting with individuals experiencing the same feelings as me. Over time, these exchanges grew into friendships that resemble a second family here at Imperial. My suggestion? Be authentic. With such a varied community of students, you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and values. And if you’re not quite ready to leap in, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others throughout the year.
### Confronting the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and complexity was another significant challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others appearing to excel. But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s very likely that others are too.
The crucial lesson I gleaned? Don’t be afraid to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty members, asking for help is vital. Collaboration and transparent communication can be pivotal in maneuvering the hurdles of first-year academics.
### The Significance of Support Networks
A highlight of my experience has been the fantastic support from the Materials department staff. They are genuinely invested in our success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent engagement with us, addressing our queries and offering counsel.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had utilized it sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative early on was one of the risks I embraced, and it turned out to be wonderfully fulfilling. It enabled me to forge relationships with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are ample opportunities to connect with staff, and I highly encourage you to seize these chances. The support and resources available are designed to aid your success—don’t hesitate to utilize them!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I experienced—both prior to and during university—were baseless. With extensive support options from faculty and fellow students, I’ve realized that I’m never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
If I could offer one piece of guidance to incoming students, it would be this: welcome the apprehension and take those bold steps. Whether it’s introducing yourself to new individuals, seeking help, or stepping outside your comfort zone, these acts of bravery will enhance your university experience in extraordinary ways.
