**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat shy and reserved, embarking on such an uncertain path was not something I was used to. Now, as I reflect on an academic year that has been filled with personal growth, challenges, and lots of enjoyable moments, I can recognize how much this experience has changed me. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was the task of making connections. If you’re an aspiring student perusing this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and I can boldly proclaim that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known.
The pivotal moment arrived when I chose to take a risk and strike up casual conversations with others who shared my uncertain position. This small act opened the door to discovering a second family here at Imperial, both within my course and throughout the university. What I have come to understand is that taking that first step is always a worthwhile endeavor, even if it feels a bit uncomfortable. And if you’re not quite ready at the outset, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals at university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic load and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second one felt even more rigorous. It’s easy to become inundated and doubt your capabilities, particularly when observing peers who seem to be flourishing.
What aided me in overcoming these challenges was the recognition that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you find something bewildering, it’s likely that others experience the same confusion. The essential lesson is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Developing the ability to ask for help is undoubtedly one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Community and Support
In discussing support, I must highlight how incredible the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely care about our success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and were always ready to address our issues.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral resources available until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. At the beginning of the year, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved incredibly beneficial. There are countless ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and I strongly recommend seizing these opportunities. My greatest takeaway? Don’t hesitate to leverage the resources and support mechanisms at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
In reflecting on my inaugural year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the ample support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to juggle the demands of exams and deadlines while also savoring university life.
To any incoming or prospective students reading this: embrace the forthcoming journey. Take those leaps of faith, seek help when necessary, and remember to relish the experience. University is a period of growth, and with the proper mindset and support, you will excel.
