### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Contributed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and ambiguity regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had previously been shy and introverted, jumping into this new phase felt rather intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year marked by development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can’t help but consider the lessons I’ve grasped and how significantly I’ve transformed.
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, you may feel apprehensive about this as well. On my initial day in university housing, right before the term commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to go out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known. The people I’ve encountered here have become my second family, both within my program and throughout the university.
So, what have I discovered? The essential thing is to take that bold step early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and values.
#### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the demands and complexity of university-level material was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more profound. It’s easy to become inundated and question your capabilities, particularly when you notice others who seem to navigate everything effortlessly.
What aided me was realizing that everyone is on a similar journey. If you’re finding something challenging, it’s likely others are as well. The most valuable lesson I took away from my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from your classmates or the teaching staff, reaching out can significantly impact your experience.
#### The Value of Support
Speaking of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in our success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. They keep lines of communication open throughout the year and are always willing to address our queries.
I didn’t utilize the pastoral support system until late in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was among the best choices I made. It enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal duties or informal chats, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best benefits one can give oneself. My most significant lesson? Make the most of the support structures at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
#### Insights from My First Year
Looking back, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. There is a plethora of support available, from faculty to fellow students, to guide you through obstacles. I’ve realized that I’m never truly isolated, and it is feasible to balance the tension of exams and deadlines with joyous moments and laughter.
As I progress, I feel thankful for the personal growth, friendships, and experiences that have influenced my journey over the past year. To anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek help.
