**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was about to embark on my first year as a newcomer in the **[Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link)** program. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, jumping straight into this new phase was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment, I recognize the transformative nature of the experience. So, what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Fear of Socializing
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the outset of university was the task of making connections. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may share similar sentiments. On my very first day in student housing, just days prior to the beginning of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.
The pivotal moment arrived when I dared myself to initiate small conversations with fellow students who were feeling just as uncertain as I was. Gradually, these exchanges evolved into significant friendships, and I now view my friends here at Imperial as a second family. The vital takeaway for me? Take a leap of faith right from the start. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, be yourself—Imperial boasts a diverse community, so you’re bound to encounter individuals who share your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the higher complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was quite apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more intense. Being in such a rigorous academic setting can occasionally undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying diligently and feel as though you’re falling behind.
What helped me through this was the understanding that I wasn’t alone—everyone was grappling with similar difficulties. If you find something confusing, it’s likely that others are having the same struggle. The most crucial skill I acquired in my first year was the ability to seek assistance. Whether reaching out to classmates or asking for guidance from faculty, requesting help can significantly impact your journey.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, one of the standout features of my first year was the remarkable support from the Materials department. The staff earnestly want students to thrive and are sympathetic to the challenges we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year, addressing our concerns and offering helpful advice.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the end of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the position of year well-being representative was another step I took at the start of the year, and it proved to be exceptionally fulfilling. It allowed me to establish connections with staff members, which became invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and I wholeheartedly encourage you to seize these opportunities. My main takeaway? Never hesitate to tap into the resources and support systems available to you—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
In summary, my first year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during university—was frequently unwarranted. With a broad array of support options from staff and peers, I’ve learned that I am never entirely alone. Most importantly, I’ve figured out how to balance the demands of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun.
Reflecting on my journey, I am proud of the progress I’ve made and look forward to the experiences that await me. To anyone getting ready to embark on their own university adventure: embrace the obstacles, take those leaps of faith, and remember that support is always readily available.
