**Reflections on My Initial Year Pursuing Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed with anxiety, apprehension, and ambiguity about what was coming my way. I was on the brink of commencing my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Diving headfirst into new experiences was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of substantial personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gathered, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the quest to forge friendships. For numerous incoming students, this becomes one of the most intimidating facets of starting life at university, and I was no different. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, just prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the most remarkable friendships of my life. These connections have become like a second family to me, both within the university and my program. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in small conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings.
What did I discover? That first leap of faith at the year’s start is invariably worthwhile. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel comfortable instantly, that’s perfectly fine! There are numerous icebreaker events and chances to help you bond with others. Most importantly, I uncovered that being your authentic self is essential. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to find those who share your passions and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was palpable, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more formidable. Being immersed in such a rigorous academic environment can sometimes unsettle your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as if you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me during these times was the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If I failed to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were struggling too. The most beneficial lesson I learned during my first year was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This straightforward act made an incredible difference and is something I encourage every new student to adopt.
### The Helpful Faculty
The staff in the Materials department have been outstanding. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our worries and providing support.
Though I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until the year’s end, I regret not engaging sooner. One of the bold steps I took at the beginning of the year was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with staff, which turned out to be tremendously beneficial. There are many avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can enhance your university experience significantly. My foremost takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you—it exists for a purpose, and you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive range of support accessible from both staff and fellow students, I came to realize that I was never truly isolated. I also discovered how to juggle the stress from exams and deadlines while still enjoying myself and maximizing my university experience.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a remarkable journey of transformation. It has been a time of growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. For anyone poised to embark on a similar adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help, and always remain true to yourself.
