**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been more reserved and shy, venturing into the unfamiliar was a daunting experience. Now, reflecting on a year filled with learning, challenges, and joy, I can truly appreciate how much I’ve grown and what I’ve accomplished.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making New Friends
One of the most daunting challenges of starting university was the idea of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably something that concerns you as well. I can vividly recall my first day moving into my accommodation—I spent that entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I’m proud to say I have formed some of the closest friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both in my program and outside of it. This all began with taking small steps—engaging in light conversation with others who were just as apprehensive and new as I was.
What did I take away from this experience? Taking that first step is always rewarding. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous icebreaker activities and events are designed to facilitate connections. Most importantly, just be yourself. Given the vibrant and diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find others who share your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic rigors of university was another significant challenge. The leap from A-levels to university coursework was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your skillset when you observe others studying and appearing to thrive.
What propelled me forward was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are feeling the same. The essential lesson here is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or professors. This was perhaps the most important insight I gained in my first year: don’t be afraid to ask for help.
### Developing Connections with Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in the success of their students and are acutely aware of the challenges we encounter. They are approachable, understanding, and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year to discuss our concerns.
Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. One of the best choices I made was to serve as a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or casual interactions, building rapport with your lecturers and tutors can significantly enhance your experience. My principal takeaway? Make the most of the support resources available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting back, this year has imparted a wealth of knowledge. The anxious feelings I experienced prior to and during my time at university were often unwarranted. With the extensive support provided by faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone.
I’ve learned how to manage the stress of examinations and deadlines while also cherishing moments of happiness and enjoyment. Most importantly, I’ve evolved as an individual, stepping beyond my comfort zone and welcoming the opportunities that came my way.
If you’re preparing to begin your own university adventure, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. But also recognize that you will find your footing, establish significant connections, and uncover just how much you’re capable of achieving.
