**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, diving into the unfamiliar was an intimidating challenge. Now, reflecting on this past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of joyous experiences. So, what have I gained from this, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the process of making friends. Beginning university can be quite overwhelming, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a major source of your apprehension. On my first day in the student residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. These relationships have evolved into my second family at Imperial, beginning with simple actions—like engaging in light-hearted conversations with people who were as apprehensive as I was.

What have I learned? Taking that initial courageous step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, don’t fret—there are plenty of icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Managing the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the demanding coursework and heightened complexity of the subject material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term was even more formidable. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others around you appearing to excel.

What assisted me during these times was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The key is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or faculty members. This is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Support

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and support personnel genuinely aspire for students to achieve success and are understanding of the hurdles we confront. They maintain transparent communication with us throughout the year, addressing our issues and providing assistance.

I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. Early in the year, I took the initiative to become a wellbeing representative for my year, which helped me establish connections with faculty members. This experience proved to be incredibly valuable, and I strongly encourage engaging with your lecturers and support staff. They are here to assist, and tapping into the resources they provide can have a profound impact.

### Insights Gained

In retrospect, this year has shown me that many of the fears I harbored—both prior to starting university and throughout the academic year—were unfounded. With the abundance of support provided by staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I discovered how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while still making time for enjoyment and fun.

So, to anyone about to embark on their university adventure: welcome the anxiety, take those leaps of faith, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You will develop in ways you never anticipated, and you will look back on this period with pride and thankfulness.
