**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of nerves, fears, and uncertainties about what was to come. I was preparing to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been shy and reserved, stepping into the unknown felt quite overwhelming. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with growth, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment, I recognize just how much I’ve absorbed and how far I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
A major source of intimidation upon starting university was forging friendships. If you’re a future student, this may resonate with you as a significant worry. On my first day in student accommodation, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had.
At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, which began with simple chats with others who were feeling the same way I was. What did I glean from this journey? Firstly, it’s crucial to take that leap of faith at the start of the year. If you’re feeling hesitant, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and opportunities are crafted to help you connect with your peers. Secondly, just be true to yourself. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to find people who share your passions and ideals.
### Addressing Academic Challenges
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition between the first and second terms felt increasingly daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your skills when witnessing others studying with such confidence.
What aided me during those times was the understanding that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, there’s a good chance others are too. The crucial thing is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Mastering the art of asking for help is one of the most vital skills to hone in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want students to thrive and are sympathetic to the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they ensured open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing guidance.
Even though I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I now regret not doing it sooner. At the year’s beginning, I took a leap by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster relationships with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to engage with staff, and taking that step can significantly enhance your university experience. My most important takeaway? Make the most of the support systems offered to you—you can never receive too much help!
### Insights Gained
This year has revealed to me that the apprehension I faced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the range of support options available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve learned to navigate the stress stemming from exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of joy and laughter.
In hindsight, I notice how much I’ve developed, and I’m eager for the future of my journey. To anyone on the brink of their own university adventure: embrace the hurdles, take those leaps of faith, and always remember—you’re never truly alone.
