**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I set out on an adventure that was both exhilarating and daunting: pursuing my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. During that time, I felt anxious, uncertain, and filled with doubts about what the future held. Daring to embrace the unknown was not something my introverted nature was used to. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with growth, challenges, and lots of enjoyment, I can’t help but think about the lessons learned and how far I have progressed.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating obstacles I faced at the outset was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might be experiencing similar fears. On my first day in student accommodation—a few days prior to the start of term—I ended up spending the whole day in my room, too fearful to step out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships in my life.
The breakthrough moment? Taking that first step and engaging in casual conversations with others who were just as anxious as I was. Over time, these exchanges blossomed into meaningful connections, and I now feel like I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial. My recommendation? Be authentic. With the variety of individuals at the university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values. And if you’re not quite ready to leap in right away, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet others throughout the year.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was acclimatizing to the increased workload and the higher level of difficulty in the material. The transition from A-levels to university was distinct, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when you observe others seemingly handling everything with grace.
What assisted me most was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, it’s likely others are too. The crucial step is to seek help—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for assistance was one of the most invaluable lessons I took away from my initial year.
### The Value of Support and Community
Speaking of assistance, I cannot emphasize enough how remarkable the Materials department staff are. They sincerely want students to thrive and consistently show empathy towards the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication open and offered a plethora of resources to aid us in facing academic and personal challenges.
Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was another significant move I made early on, and it proved to be a tremendously fulfilling experience. It enabled me to foster relationships with staff and appreciate the nurturing environment they create. My lesson? Don’t hesitate to make use of the resources and assistance at your disposal—you can never have too much support.
### Insights Gained
As I reflect, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt—both leading up to university and during my time here—was frequently unwarranted. With the abundant support from staff and peers, I learned that I was never truly alone. More importantly, I found out how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
As I get ready for the next phase of my university experience, I feel grateful for the obstacles, friendships, and personal development that have characterized my first year. To anyone embarking on their own journey: take the plunge, embrace the support surrounding you, and have faith that you will find your path.
