**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about the path ahead. I was about to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, taking the plunge into this new experience felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with development, obstacles, and happiness, I realize how profoundly transformative this experience has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Taking the Leap: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may be experiencing similar concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to step outside and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can confidently proclaim that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships of my life.

The secret was taking that initial step—striking up casual conversations with others who were feeling just as unsure as I was. Over time, these exchanges evolved into significant friendships. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a simple act of courage.

If you’re feeling anxious about connecting with others, try not to worry too much. The university provides a wealth of icebreaker events and opportunities to meet new people. And keep in mind, the best strategy is to simply be yourself. With such a varied community, you’re sure to meet individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Academic Challenge
Adapting to the academic pressures of university life was another considerable obstacle. The shift from A-levels to university-level education was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more difficult. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your abilities, particularly when you observe others seeming to flourish.

What aided me most was the realization that I wasn’t the only one struggling. Everyone was dealing with comparable challenges, and if I wasn’t grasping a concept, it was likely others were having trouble as well. The most valuable lesson I gained during my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether from your classmates or academic staff, reaching out can significantly impact your experience.

### Support from Staff
Speaking of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and support staff are genuinely invested in the success of students and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They foster open lines of communication throughout the year and are always eager to assist.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I regret not utilizing it sooner. Early on, I took a step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to engage with staff members. Establishing these connections was incredibly valuable, and I’d encourage everyone to tap into the support systems available. Whether it’s for academic assistance or personal support, there’s no such thing as too much help.

### Lessons Learned
Reflecting back, this year has imparted numerous lessons. The anxious feelings I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—were often unfounded. Thanks to the support from staff and peers, I recognized that I was never truly alone.

Most importantly, I learned how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun. University is a period of personal growth, and while challenges are unavoidable, the available support and opportunities make it all manageable.

As I progress, I am thankful for the lessons, friendships, and experiences that have defined my first year. To anyone soon beginning their university journey: take the leap, ask for help, and savor the experience.
