**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I got ready to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who has always been rather reserved, plunging into such a significant life transition felt challenging. Now, as I look back on a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I understand just how much I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this is a significant worry, and I was no different. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before classes were set to commence, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The pivotal moment arrived when I encouraged myself to initiate small talk with others who were experiencing the same feelings. That simple action led to the creation of a second family here at Imperial. My advice? Take an early leap of faith. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared, there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university-level work was yet another significant challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and assume they have everything under control.
What was most beneficial for me was the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely others are too. The crucial element is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Learning to ask for help may be one of the most vital skills to cultivate in your first year.
### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
On the subject of support, the staff in the Materials department have been exceptional. They truly care about our success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and were consistently ready to address our issues.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I wish I had accessed it earlier. One of my best choices was to become a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to establish relationships with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can profoundly impact your university experience. My greatest takeaway? Make the most of the assistance and resources at your disposal—you can never receive too much support.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even during the academic year—was frequently unnecessary. With the vast array of support systems offered by staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me the art of balancing exam stress and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
In the end, my initial year at Imperial has been a journey marked by growth, connection, and resilience. To anyone gearing up to embark on their own university journey: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ll be surprised by how much you can accomplish.
