**Reflections on My Inaugural Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been introverted, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Now, as I reflect, I recognize a year filled with transformation—marked by personal development, challenges, and an abundance of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained from this experience, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this represents a significant concern about starting university, and I was no different. On the day I moved into my residence, just prior to the commencement of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to the present, and I can boldly affirm that I have made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both within my program and across the university—have become like a second family to me. It all began with brief exchanges with others who were feeling similarly.

What did I take away from this? Taking that first step of courage at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. Being in such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes shake your self-assurance, especially when observing others studying and feeling as though you’re lagging behind.

What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re unclear about something, it’s likely that others are feeling the same way. The crucial point is to ask for assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. This has been perhaps the most vital lesson I gleaned during my first year: don’t hesitate to seek help when necessary.

### The Value of Supportive Staff

Talking about support, the faculty in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about the success of students and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us and addressed our issues.

I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early in the year, I took a chance and became a year well-being representative, which allowed me to cultivate relationships with faculty members. This experience proved to be immeasurably beneficial. Whether through structured roles or casual interactions, establishing rapport with the staff is one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself. My key takeaway here? Utilize the support systems accessible to you—you can never receive too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Upon reflection, this past year has shown me that the anxiety I felt—both before and during university—was largely unfounded. With the abundance of support from staff and peers, those anxieties quickly dissipated. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also enjoying moments of laughter and pleasure.

As I look back on my first year, I take pride in how far I’ve progressed. From conquering my initial shyness to tackling academic challenges, this journey has been one of development and self-discovery. To anyone getting ready to embark on their university journey: take that plunge, ask for assistance, and most importantly, be yourself. You can do it!
