**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what was ahead. I was on the verge of starting my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unfamiliar felt intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize a year that was transformative—packed with growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights did I gain, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Challenge of Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely something you’re also anxious about. I recall my initial day in student housing, just days before classes commenced. I spent the whole day sheltered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly share that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. These connections have turned into a second family for me at Imperial. It simply required stepping out of my comfort zone and initiating conversations with others who were navigating similar experiences.
What did I take away from this? Taking that first step is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to engage with others. And above all, just be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was acclimating to the heightened workload and the intricate course content. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities in the company of high-achieving classmates.
What assisted me through this adjustment was understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding something perplexing, there’s a good chance others are too. The vital lesson is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or the academic staff. This was perhaps the most important insight I gained during my first year: don’t think twice about asking for help.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
Speaking of support, the staff within the Materials department are amazing. They truly care about student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our issues and providing guidance.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took the plunge and became a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster relationships with staff members, which turned out to be extremely helpful. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly improve your university experience. My foremost takeaway? Utilize the support systems accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance.
### Reflections
Looking back, this year has shown me that the uneasiness I felt—both prior to and during university—was mostly unfounded. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment, and I’ve evolved in ways I never expected.
To anyone poised to begin their university adventure: embrace the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and remember that support is always at hand.
