**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been introverted and reserved, embracing such a significant change was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a journey rich with personal development, challenges, and numerous joyful moments. So, what insights did I gain, and where do I stand now?
### Overcoming the Fear of Making Friends
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. For many new students, this is one of the major worries when beginning university, and I certainly felt the same. On my first day at student accommodation, just days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Flash forward to now, and I’m pleased to share that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. These bonds have become like a second family to me, both in my course and throughout the university. It merely took stepping beyond my comfort boundary and initiating casual conversations with those who were experiencing similar feelings.
What did I take away from this? That first leap is invariably worth it. If you’re not ready or don’t feel at ease immediately, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaking events and chances to meet people throughout the year. Above all, I discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse population at Imperial, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Tackling the Academic Transition
Another major obstacle was acclimatizing to the academic workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the leap from the first to the second term proved even more arduous. Being in such a high-pressure academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying diligently and you feel like you’re lagging behind.
What aided me in navigating this was recognizing that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The best approach is to seek assistance—whether it be from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is possibly the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Supportive Staff
Speaking of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and support personnel genuinely care about student success and are acutely aware of the hurdles we encounter. They empathize with our struggles and ensure open lines of communication throughout the year to tackle any concerns we might have.
I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Reaching out for assistance is invaluable. Early on, I chose to take on the role of a year well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with staff members. This ended up being one of the most fulfilling decisions I made. There are various avenues to establish rapport with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support that’s available to you—you can never have too much help!
### Lessons Learned
All in all, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was frequently unmerited. An abundance of support exists, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in overcoming any challenges. I’ve realized that I am never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with enjoyable moments.
Looking back, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made. Embarking on university may seem like a plunge into uncertainty, but it also represents a chance for growth, connection, and unforgettable experiences.
