**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone like me—naturally shy and introverted—taking this bold step into the unfamiliar was quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I feel compelled to consider the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was the task of forming friendships. This concern resonates with many new students, and I certainly felt it too. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly claim that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve connected with here have become akin to a second family for me. It all initiated with small actions—sparking casual dialogues with others who were also feeling out of place.
What did I discover from this experience? Firstly, taking that initial leap of faith is invaluable. If you’re not quite ready to plunge in right away, don’t worry—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others as the year progresses. Secondly, the most crucial aspect is to remain authentic to yourself. With such a rich diversity at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was acclimating to the academic intensity and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when witnessing others study and wondering if you’re measuring up.
What assisted me in managing these hurdles was the realization that everyone else is experiencing similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling to comprehend something, there’s a good chance others are too. The essential strategy is to seek support—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Developing the ability to seek assistance is perhaps the most beneficial skill you can cultivate during your initial year.
### Assistance from the Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty within the Materials department are truly remarkable. They sincerely wish for students to flourish and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open correspondence and were proactive in addressing our queries.
Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support offered until late in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the steps I took at the year’s start, and it emerged as a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to establish relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Leverage the support structures available to you—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting back, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt—both before entering university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the extensive support accessible from faculty and fellow students, those apprehensions can be alleviated. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated and that it’s feasible to manage exam stress and deadlines while enjoying moments of happiness and fun.
As I prepare to advance in my studies, I am thankful for the personal growth I’ve experienced and the relationships I’ve cultivated. To anyone about to embark on their own university journey: take that leap, embrace your true self, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ve got this!
